Salutations to Allah and His Messengers

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of saying salutations to Allah and His messengers, and how it should be done.

It was narrated that Ibn Mas'ud said: "When we prayed with the Messenger of Allah , we used to say: "Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah (SWT), peace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il'. The Messenger of Allah said: 'Do not say "Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah, for Allah is As-Salam". Rather say: "At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahis-salihin, ashahdu an la illaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger)".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of saying salutations to Allah and His messengers. It was narrated by Ibn Mas'ud that when he prayed with the Messenger of Allah, they used to say "Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il". The Messenger of Allah then said that instead of saying "Peace be upon Allah", one should say "At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuhu. As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahis salihin, ashahdu an la illaha illAllah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu" which means compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you O Prophet and the mercy of God and his blessings. Peace be upon us and on all righteous slaves of God. I bear witness that none has the right to worship except God alone and I bear witness that Muhammad is his slave messenger. This hadith teaches us about respecting our religion by showing reverence for our Creator through proper greetings in prayer or otherwise. It also teaches us humility by reminding us not to forget those who have been sent by Him such as prophets or angels like Jibril or Mika’il who have been given special roles in delivering messages from Him for mankind’s benefit .
