The Importance of Not Introducing Innovations in Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of not introducing innovations in prayer and how it was practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his four successors.

It was narrated from Abu Malik Al-Ashja'i that his father said: "I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah and he did not say the Qunut, and I prayed behind Abu Bakr and he did not say the Qunut, and I prayed behind Umar and he did not say the Qunut, and I prayed behind Uthman and he did not say the Qunut, and I prayed behind Ali and he did not say the Qunut". Then he said: "O my son, this is an innovation".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of not introducing innovations in prayer. It was narrated from Abu Malik Al-Ashja'i that his father said he prayed behind Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and all four successors - Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali - without any Qunut being recited during the prayer. His father then told him that this practice is an innovation which should be avoided. This hadith teaches us to follow the practices of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as well as those of his companions who were appointed to lead after him without making any changes or additions to them. We should also be careful not to introduce any new practices into our prayers as they are considered innovations which are discouraged in Islam.
