Sunan an-Nasai 1061 (Book 12, Hadith 33) #15669
Following the Imam in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that when the Imam is leading prayer, one should follow his movements and recite the same words.

It was narrated from Anas that: The Prophet fell from a horse onto his right side, and they entered upon him to visit him. The time for prayer came, and when he had finished praying he said: "The Imam is appointed to be followed, so when he bows, then bow, and when he stands up, then stand up, and when he says: 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears the one who praises Him)' then say: 'Rabbana wa lakal-hamd (Our Lord, and to You be the praise)'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about how to pray in congregation. When we are praying with an Imam, we must follow his movements and recite the same words as him. We must bow when he bows, stand up when he stands up and say “Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah” after he says it. This phrase means “Allah hears those who praise Him” and is a way of praising Allah for His greatness. After saying this phrase, we should also say “Rabbana wa lakal-hamd” which means “Our Lord, and to You be all praise”. By following these instructions from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , we can ensure that our prayers are done correctly according to Islamic teachings.
