Seeking Refuge & Mercy in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ would pause and seek refuge with Allah when reciting verses that mentioned punishment, and pause for mercy when reciting verses that mentioned mercy. He would also say specific phrases in his bowing and prostration.

It was narrated from Hudhaifah that: He prayed beside the Prophet one night. He recited, and when he came to a verse that mentioned punishment, he would pause and seek refuge with Allah; if he came to a verse that mentioned mercy, he would pause for mercy. In his bowing he would say: 'Subhana Rabbil-Azim (Glory be to my Lord Almighty)' and in his prostration he would say: 'Subhan Rabbil-A'la (Glory be to my Lord the Most High)'."
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، وَابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ، عَنِ الْمُسْتَوْرِدِ بْنِ الأَحْنَفِ، عَنْ صِلَةَ بْنِ زُفَرَ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، أَنَّهُ صَلَّى إِلَى جَنْبِ النَّبِيِّ لَيْلَةً فَقَرَأَ فَكَانَ إِذَا مَرَّ بِآيَةِ عَذَابٍ وَقَفَ وَتَعَوَّذَ وَإِذَا مَرَّ بِآيَةِ رَحْمَةٍ وَقَفَ فَدَعَا وَكَانَ يَقُولُ فِي رُكُوعِهِ ‏"‏ سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَفِي سُجُودِهِ ‏"‏ سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of seeking refuge with Allah and asking for His mercy during prayer. It is narrated by Hudhaifah, who was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. During prayer, the Prophet ﷺ would pause whenever he came to a verse that mentioned punishment or mercy, seeking refuge from Allah or asking for His mercy respectively. In his bowing position he would say “Subhana Rabbil-Azim” which means “Glory be to my Lord Almighty” while in prostration he would say “Subhan Rabbil-A’la” which means “Glory be to my Lord Most High”. This hadith teaches us about the importance of being mindful during prayer and taking advantage of this time to ask Allah for protection from harm as well as His blessings and forgiveness.
