Raising Hands in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) raised his hands to the level of his shoulders when saying the opening Takbir of prayer, when saying Takbir before bowing, and when saying 'Sami Allahu liman hamidah'. He did not do this during prostration or after.

It was narrated that Ibn Umar said: I saw the Messenger of Allah when he said the opening Takbir of the prayer, raise his hands until they were level with his shoulders. When he said the Takbir before bowing he did likewise, and when he said: 'Sami Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him),' he did likewise, then he said: 'Rabbana wa lakal-hamd (Our Lord, to You be praise)'. But he did not do that when he prostrated or when he raised his head from prostration.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respectfully raise your hands to shoulder level when reciting certain phrases in prayer such as "Allahu Akbar" and "Sami Allahu Liman Hamidah".

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn Umar states that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) raised his hands to the level of his shoulders when he said certain phrases during prayer. This is done as a sign of respect and reverence for Allah. When he said the opening takbir, which is “Allahu Akbar” or “God is great”, he would raise his hands up until they were at shoulder level. He also did this before bowing and after saying “Sami Allahu liman hamidah” which means “Allah hears those who praise Him”. However, he did not do this while prostrating or after raising his head from prostration. This shows us that we should be mindful and respectful in our prayers to God by raising our hands at certain times as a sign of reverence for Him.
