Sunan an-Nasai 832 (Book 10, Hadith 56) #15440
Following the Imam in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that the Imam should be followed in prayer and if he prays sitting, then all should pray sitting.

It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah rode a horse and fell from it, and sustained an injury on his right side. He led one of the prayers sitting, and we prayed behind him sitting. When he had finished he said: "The Imam is appointed to be followed. If he prays standing then pray standing; when he bows, bow; when he says, Sami' Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him), say 'Rabbana lakalhamd (Our Lord, to You be praise); and if he prays sitting then pray sitting, all of you".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about following the Imam in prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was riding a horse when he fell and injured his right side. He then led one of the prayers while sitting, and everyone else prayed behind him while also sitting. After finishing, he said that it is important to follow the Imam during prayer; if he stands, we should stand; when he bows, we should bow; when he says “Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah” we should say “Rabbana lakalhamd”; and if he prays while sitting then everyone else must also sit down for their prayer. This hadith teaches us to respect our leaders and follow their instructions even during worship as it is an act of obedience to Allah SWT. We must remember that our actions are reflections of our faith so it is important to pay attention to how we pray as well as what we say during our prayers.
