Shortening Prayers for Others

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised people to keep their prayers short when leading others, as there may be sick, weak and elderly people present. When praying alone, one can make the prayer as long as they wish.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: "When any one of you leads the people in prayer, let him make it short, for among them are the sick, the weak and the elderly. And when any one of you prays by himself, let him make it as long as he wishes".

QUICK LESSONS:
Lead a group in prayer while keeping it short for those who may be present who are sick or elderly .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that when we are leading a group of people in prayer, it is important to keep the prayer short so that those who are present do not become too tired or uncomfortable. This includes those who may be sick, weak or elderly. However, if we are praying by ourselves then we can make our prayers longer if we wish to do so. This hadith teaches us the importance of being considerate and mindful of others when leading them in prayer and also encourages us to take advantage of our personal time with Allah by making our individual prayers longer if desired.
