Sahih al-Bukhari 1605 (Book 25, Hadith 91) #1542
Kissing the Black Stone Despite Its Inability to Benefit or Harm

SUMMARY: Umar bin Al-Khattab acknowledges that the Black Stone is a stone and can neither benefit nor harm, but he still kisses it because the Prophet (ﷺ) did so. He also explains why they do Ramal in Tawaf, which is to show off before pagans.

Narrated Zaid bin Aslam from his father who said: "'Umar bin Al-Khattab addressed the Corner (Black Stone) saying, 'By Allah! I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit nor harm. Had I not seen the Prophet touching (and kissing) you, I would never have touched (and kissed) you'. Then he kissed it and said, 'There is no reason for us to do Ramal (in Tawaf) except that we wanted to show off before the pagans, and now Allah has destroyed them'. 'Umar added, '(Nevertheless), the Prophet did that and we do not want to leave it (ie Ramal)'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , Respect others regardless of their beliefs .

EXPLANATIONS:
Umar bin Al-Khattab was a companion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and one of the four rightly guided caliphs. He was known for his wisdom and piety. In this hadith, he acknowledges that the Black Stone is just a stone and can neither benefit nor harm anyone, yet he still kisses it out of respect for what Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did. He also explains why they do Ramal in Tawaf which is to show off before pagans who used to worship idols at Kaaba before Islam came into existence. This hadith teaches us that we should always follow what our beloved Prophet ﷺ did even if we don't understand its significance or purpose at first glance as Allah knows best about everything. It also teaches us not to be arrogant towards those who are different from us as Allah does not like arrogance in any form or shape.
