Sunan an-Nasai 626 (Book 7, Hadith 1) #15234
Announcing Prayer Times in Madinah

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Muslims in Madinah trying to figure out a way to announce prayer times, and Umar's suggestion of sending a man to call for prayer was accepted by the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W).

Nafi' narrated that 'Abdullah bin 'Umar used to say: "When the Muslims arrived in Al-Madinah they used to gather and try to figure out the time for prayer, and no one gave the call to prayer. One day they spoke about that; some of them said: 'Let us use a bell like the Christians do;' others said, 'No, a horn like the Jews have'. 'Umar, may ,Allah be pleased with him, said: 'Why don't you send a man to announce the time of prayer?' The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said: 'O Bilal, get up and give the call to prayer'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Look for solutions within one's own faith rather than copying other religions or cultures when it comes to religious matters; Be open minded and willing accept new ideas even if they come from unexpected sources; Follow instructions given by Prophet Muhammad SAW; Give calls five times each day during prayers .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Muslims in Madinah were trying to figure out a way to announce prayer times. Some suggested using bells like the Christians, while others suggested using horns like the Jews. However, Umar suggested sending a man to call for prayer and this suggestion was accepted by Prophet Muhammad SAW. Bilal was then chosen as he had a beautiful voice and he would give the call for prayers five times each day. This hadith teaches us that we should always look for solutions that are within our own faith rather than copying other religions or cultures when it comes to religious matters. It also teaches us that we should be open minded and willing to accept new ideas even if they come from unexpected sources such as Umar who was not an official religious leader at this time but still offered an important solution which was accepted by Prophet Muhammad SAW himself.
