Sahih al-Bukhari 1562 (Book 25, Hadith 48) #1499
Rules of Hajj and 'Umra

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the rules of Hajj and 'Umra, and how those who assumed Ihram for either Hajj or both Hajj and 'Umra did not finish their Ihram until the day of sacrifice.

Narrated 'Aisha: We set out with Allah's Messenger s (to Mecca) in the year of the Prophet's Last Hajj. Some of us had assumed Ihram for 'Umra only, some for both Hajj and 'Umra, and others for Hajj only. Allah's Apostle assumed Ihram for Hajj. So whoever had assumed Ihram for Hajj or for both Hajj and 'Umra did not finish the Ihram till the day of sacrifice. .

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow religious obligations faithfully while being devoted solely to God .

EXPLANATIONS:
This Hadith explains that when Muslims go on pilgrimage to Mecca, they must enter a state called "Ihram" which is a spiritual state where one is devoted to God alone. Depending on what type of pilgrimage they are doing, they may have to remain in this state until after their pilgrimage has been completed - usually until after sacrificing an animal as part of their ritual obligations during hajj or umrah. This Hadith also teaches us that we should be devoted to God alone while performing our religious duties so that we can gain His blessings from them.
