Sahih al-Bukhari 1554 (Book 25, Hadith 40) #1491
Pre-Ihram Rituals for Hajj

SUMMARY: Ibn Umar used to oil himself with a special oil and go to the Mosque of Al-Hulaita to pray before assuming Ihram for Hajj. He saw the Prophet (ﷺ) doing the same.

Narrated Nafi': Whenever Ibn 'Umar intended to go to Mecca he used to oil himself with a sort of oil that had no pleasant smell, then he would go to the Mosque of Al-Hulaita and offer the prayer, and then ride. When he mounted well on his Mount and the Mount stood up straight, he would proclaim the intention of assuming Ihram, and he used to say that he had seen the Prophet doing the same.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , Be mindful about your appearance while performing religious duties .

EXPLANATIONS:
Before embarking on their journey for Hajj, Muslims are required to enter into a state of consecration known as Ihram. This hadith narrates that Ibn Umar used to perform certain rituals before entering into this state of consecration. He would oil himself with an odorless oil and then proceed towards the Mosque of Al Hulaita where he would offer his prayer. After mounting his ride he would proclaim his intention of assuming Ihram and mention that he had seen Prophet Muhammad ﷺ doing the same thing. This shows us how important it is for Muslims to follow in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when performing religious duties such as Hajj or Umrah. It also teaches us that we should be mindful about our appearance when performing religious duties and not use any fragrant oils or perfumes which may distract others from their prayers or other acts of worship during these sacred times.
