Sunan an-Nasai 288 (Book 1, Hadith 289) #14895
Treating Menstruating Women Fairly

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaching the Jews that menstruating women should not be treated differently and that they should be allowed to eat, drink, and mix with them in their houses.

It was narrated that Anas said: "When one of their womenfolk menstruated, the Jews would not eat or drink with them, nor mix with them in their houses. They asked the Prophet of Allah about that, and Allah the Mighty and Sublime revealed: The ask you concerning menstruation. Say: 'That is an Adha (a harmful thing)'.2 So the Messenger of Allah commanded them to eat and drink with them (menstruating women) and to mix with them in their houses, and to do everything with them except intercourse. The Jews said: 'The Messenger of Allah does not leave anything against it'. Usaid bin Hudair and 'Abbad bin Bishr went and told the Messenger of Allah and they said: 'Should we have intercourse with them when they are menstruating?' The expression of the Messenger of Allah changed greatly until we thought that he was angry with them, and they left. Then the Messenger of Allah received a gift of milk, so he sent someone to bring them back and he gave them some to drink, so they knew that he was not angry with them". 1 Al-Baqarah 2:222. 2 Al-Baqarah 2:222.

QUICK LESSONS:
Treat all people equally regardless of any differences between us and show kindness even when we disagree on certain matters

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of a time when the Jews were treating women who were menstruating differently than other women. They would not eat or drink with them, nor mix with them in their houses. When asked about this practice, Allah revealed a verse from the Quran which stated that menstruation was an adha or harmful thing. The Prophet Muhammad then commanded them to treat these women equally and allow them to do everything except intercourse while they were menstruating. He also showed his kindness by sending a gift of milk for these people so they knew he was not angry with them. This hadith teaches us that we must treat all people equally regardless of any differences between us and show kindness even when we disagree on certain matters.
