Sunan an-Nasai 18 (Book 1, Hadith 18) #14624
Modesty and Cleanliness in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us the importance of modesty and cleanliness by performing wudu after urinating.

It was narrated that Hudhaifah said: "I was walking with the Messenger of Allah and he came to some people's garbage dump and urinated while standing up. I turned to go away, but he called me back (to conceal him), and I was just behind him. Then when he had finished, he performed Wudu' and wiped over his Khuffs".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrated by Hudhaifah ibn Yaman tells us about the importance of modesty and cleanliness in Islam. It is said that he was walking with the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when they came across a garbage dump. The Prophet then proceeded to urinate while standing up but asked Hudhaifah to stay behind him so as to conceal him from view. After he finished urinating, he performed wudu which is a ritual cleansing before prayer or other acts of worship in Islam. This hadith teaches us that even though it is permissible for Muslims to relieve themselves while standing up outdoors, they should still maintain their modesty and perform wudhu afterwards as a sign of respect for Allah's commands. Furthermore, this hadith also serves as an example for Muslims on how to practice cleanliness even when performing mundane tasks such as relieving oneself outdoors.
