Sahih al-Bukhari 146 (Book 4, Hadith 12) #146
The Revelation of Al-Hijab

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how Umar asked the Prophet to make his wives wear veils, and Allah revealed the verses of Al-Hijab in response.

Narrated 'Aisha: The wives of the Prophet used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqi' at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night'.Umar used to say to the Prophet "Let your wives be veiled," but Allah's Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zam'a the wife of the Prophet went out at 'Isha' time and she was a tall lady'.Umar addressed her and said, "I have recognized you, O Sauda". He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of "Al-Hijab" (A complete body cover excluding the eyes).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about a time when Umar asked the Prophet to make his wives wear veils. At that time, it was not a common practice for women to cover their faces and bodies with clothing. However, Allah revealed the verses of Al-Hijab in response to Umar's request. This teaches us that we should always be mindful of our actions and words as they can have far reaching consequences. It also shows us that Allah is always listening and will respond accordingly if we ask Him for guidance or help. Furthermore, this hadith reminds us that modesty is important in Islam and should be practiced by both men and women alike.
