Sahih Muslim 3000a (Book 55, Hadith 83) #14507
Praising with Humility

SUMMARY: When praising someone, one should be careful not to overpraise them and instead speak of their qualities in a humble manner.

'Abd al-Rahman b. Abu Bakra reported on the authority of his father that a person praised another person in the presence of Allah's Apostle , whereupon he said: Woe be to thee, you have broken the neck of your friend, you have broken the neck of your friend-he said this twice. If one of you has to praise his friend at all, he should say: I think (him to be) so and Allah knows it well and I do not know the secret of the heart and Allah knows the destined end, and I cannot testify his purity against Allah but (he appears) to be so and so.

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak humbly when praising others

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of humility when praising someone. It is important to remember that we do not know the secrets of people's hearts and so we should not make assumptions about them or exaggerate their qualities. Instead, it is better to speak humbly about them and acknowledge that only Allah knows what lies in their hearts and what will become of them in the future. We can still express our admiration for others without going overboard or making false claims about them.
