Obligation of Zakat-ul-Fitr

SUMMARY: It is obligatory for all Muslims, regardless of their status, to pay Zakat-ul-Fitr.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Messenger made it incumbent on all the slave or free Muslims, male or female, to pay one Sa' of dates or barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr.

QUICK LESSONS:
Paying charity before Eid prayer

EXPLANATIONS:
According to the hadith narrated by Ibn 'Umar, it is an obligation for all Muslims to pay a certain amount of money as Zakat-ul-Fitr. This donation must be made before the Eid prayer and can be paid in either dates or barley. The amount required is one Sa' which is equivalent to approximately 3 kilograms or 6.6 pounds. This donation serves as a way for people who are less fortunate than others to have enough food during the celebration of Eid al Fitr and also serves as a form of purification from any wrongdoings that may have been committed throughout Ramadan.
