Sahih Muslim 2880c (Book 54, Hadith 3) #14296
Destruction Despite Piety

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that even if there are pious people in a society, destruction can still come if evil is predominant.

Zainab bint Jahsh, the wife of Allah's Apostle , reported that one day Allah's Messenger came out in a state of excitement with his face quite red. And he was saying: There is no god but Allah; there is a destruction in store for Arabia because of the turmoil which is near at hand as the barrier of Gog and Magog has been opened like it, and he (in order to explain it) made a ring with the help of his thumb and forefinger. I said: Allah's Messenger, would we be destroyed despite the fact that there would be pious people amongst us? He said: Yes, when evil would be predominant.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of piety and how it can be overshadowed by evil. It explains that even if there are pious people in a society, destruction can still come if evil is predominant. The Prophet Muhammad was speaking about the destruction of Arabia due to turmoil caused by Gog and Magog. He made a ring with his thumb and forefinger to explain this concept further. Zainab bint Jahsh asked him whether they would be destroyed despite having pious people amongst them, to which he replied yes when evil would be predominant. This hadith teaches us that we should strive for piety but also guard against any kind of evil or wrongdoing as it could lead to our own destruction despite our good deeds.
