Sahih Muslim 2856b (Book 53, Hadith 62) #14246
Devoting Animals to Deities in Pre-Islamic Times

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the concept of al-bahira and as-sa'iba, which are animals that were devoted to deities in pre-Islamic times. It also mentions 'Amr b. 'Amir al-Khuzili as the first person to do so.

Sa'id b. Musayyib explained" al-bahira" as that animal which is not milked but for the idols. and none amongst the people milks them, and" as-sa'iba" as that animal which is let loose for the deities. Nothing is loaded over it, and Ibn Musayyib narrated that Abu Huraira stated that Allah's Messenger said: I saw 'Amr b. 'Amir al-Khuzili dragging his intestines in fire and he was the first who devoted animals to deity.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Allah's guidance properly .

EXPLANATIONS:
In pre-Islamic times, some people would devote certain animals to their deities, such as al-bahira and as-sa'iba. Al Bahira was an animal that was not milked for anything other than idols, while As Sa'iba was an animal that was let loose for the deities without any load being placed on it. According to a narration from Abu Huraira, Prophet Muhammad saw Amr b. Amir al Khuzili dragging his intestines in fire; he is said to be the first person who devoted animals to deity before Islam came into existence. This hadith serves as a reminder of how far away from Allah's teachings people can stray if they do not follow His guidance properly and instead choose idol worship over Him.
