Sahih al-Bukhari 1485 (Book 24, Hadith 85) #1424
Teaching Children Not to Eat Charity

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught his children not to eat anything given in charity.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Dates used to be brought to Allah's Messenger immediately after being plucked. Different persons would bring their dates till a big heap collected (in front of the Prophet). Once Al-Hasan and Al-Husain were playing with these dates. One of them took a date and put it in his mouth. Allah's Messenger looked at him and took it out from his mouth and said, "Don't you know that Muhammad's offspring do not eat what is given in charity?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of what you take as charity; show gratitude towards those who give you food; respect others' property; be generous towards those less fortunate than you.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and how he taught his children not to eat anything given in charity. The hadith was narrated by Abu Huraira who said that dates were brought to the Prophet and his two sons, Hasan and Husain, were playing with them. One of them took a date and put it in his mouth but the Prophet took it out from his mouth saying “Don’t you know that Muhammad’s offspring do not eat what is given in charity?” This teaches us that we should be mindful of what we take as charity because it is something special for those who are less fortunate than us. We should also teach our children this lesson so they can understand why taking something from someone else without permission or gratitude is wrong.
