Different Levels of Punishment in Hellfire

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the varying levels of punishment in Hellfire for different people.

Samura b. Jundub reported Allah's Messenger as saying: There would be among them those to whom the fire will reach up to their ankles and to some of them the fire would reach their knees and to some it would reach their waists and to some it would reach up to their collar-bones.

QUICK LESSONS:

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the varying levels of punishment that will be given to people in Hellfire. It is reported by Samura b. Jundub that Allah's Messenger said, “There would be among them those to whom the fire will reach up to their ankles and to some of them the fire would reach their knees and to some it would reach their waists and to some it would reach up to their collar-bones”. This means that there are different levels of punishment for different people depending on how much they have sinned against Allah's commands. Those who have committed more sins will receive a higher level of punishment than those who have committed fewer sins, with each level increasing in severity as one moves up from ankles, knees, waist and collar-bone respectively.

This hadith serves as a reminder for us all that we should strive our best not only to obey Allah's commands but also stay away from any kind of sinning so we can avoid being punished severely in the hereafter. We should also remember that no matter how small or big our sins may seem, they still count against us and can lead us towards severe punishments if we do not repent soon enough or take steps towards improving ourselves spiritually before it is too late.
