Sahih Muslim 2821a (Book 52, Hadith 80) #14179
Refraining from Boring Sermons

SUMMARY: Abdullah b. Mas'ud was hesitant to deliver a sermon to his followers as he did not want to bore them, just like the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who refrained from delivering sermons on certain days for the same reason.

Shaqiq reported: We were sitting at the door of Abdullah (b. Mas'ud) waiting for him (to come out and deliver a sermon to us). It was at this time that there happened to pass by us Yazid b. Mu'awiya an-Nakha'i. We said: Inform him ('Abdullah b. Mas'ud) of our presence here. He went in and Abdullah b. Mas'ud lost no time in coming out to us and said: I was informed of your presence here but nothing hindered me to come out to you but the fact that I did not like to bore you (by stuffing your minds with sermons) as Allah's Messenger did not deliver us sermon on certain days fearing that it might prove to be boring for us.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when speaking or giving lectures; Respectfully address your audience; Be considerate towards other's feelings; Do not overwhelm people with too much information at once; Inspire others through your words & actions .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of refraining from boring people with long sermons and speeches. It is narrated by Shaqiq that they were waiting for Abdullah b. Mas'ud to come out and deliver a sermon when Yazid b. Mu'awiya an-Nakha'i passed by them and informed him of their presence there. Abdullah b. Mas'ud then came out and said that he was aware of their presence but hesitated in coming out due to his fear that he might bore them with long sermons, just like how Prophet Muhammad PBUH used to refrain from delivering sermons on certain days so as not to bore his followers with too much information at once. This hadith teaches us the importance of being mindful when speaking or giving lectures, especially in religious settings, so as not to overwhelm or tire our listeners with too much information at once which can be quite boring for them instead of inspiring or motivating them towards righteousness and good deeds.
