Sahih Muslim 2810b (Book 52, Hadith 49) #14148
The Similitude of Believers and Hypocrites

SUMMARY: A believer is like a standing crop that is sometimes shaken by the wind but eventually reaches its destined end, while a hypocrite is like a cypress tree that can be uprooted once and for all.

Ka'b b. Malik reported on the authority of his father that the similitude of a believer is that of a standing crop. The wind sometimes shakes it and sometimes raises it up and then it comes to its destined end. And the similitude of a hypocrite is that of a cypress tree which is not affected by anything but is uprooted once for all.

QUICK LESSONS:
Remain steadfast in one's faith despite difficulties faced in life .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith compares believers to standing crops and hypocrites to cypress trees. A standing crop is affected by the wind, which shakes it and sometimes raises it up, but eventually it will reach its destined end. On the other hand, a cypress tree does not get affected by anything except when it gets uprooted once for all. This hadith teaches us that believers may face difficulties in life but they will remain steadfast in their faith until they reach their ultimate goal; whereas hypocrites are easily swayed away from their beliefs and cannot stay true to them for long.
