The Power of Supplication

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the importance of supplication and how it can be used to ask for blessings in this world and the hereafter.

Abu Malik reported on the authority Of his father that he heard Allah's Messenger as saying to the person who bad come to him and asked him as to how he should beg his Lord, that he should utter these words: " O Allah, grant me pardon, have mercy upon me, protect me, provide me sustenance," and he collected his fingers together except his thumb and said: It is in these words (that there is supplication) which sums up for you (the good) of this world and that of the Hereafter.
حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ وَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ أَقُولُ حِينَ أَسْأَلُ رَبِّي قَالَ ‏"‏ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَعَافِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَيَجْمَعُ أَصَابِعَهُ إِلاَّ الإِبْهَامَ ‏"‏ فَإِنَّ هَؤُلاَءِ تَجْمَعُ لَكَ دُنْيَاكَ وَآخِرَتَكَ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the power of supplicating to Allah for blessings in this world and the hereafter. It is narrated by Abu Malik who reported on the authority Of his father that he heard Allah's Messenger say that one should utter these words when asking for something from Allah; "O Allah, grant me pardon, have mercy upon me, protect me, provide me sustenance." He then went on to explain that these words encompass all good things in both this life and in the afterlife. This hadith teaches us about how powerful our words are when we make du'a or supplicate to Allah. We should always remember to ask Him for His mercy and protection as well as His provision so that we may be blessed with all good things both now and forevermore.
