Sahih al-Bukhari 1448 (Book 24, Hadith 51) #1390
Zakat Payment for Camels

SUMMARY: The hadith explains the Zakat payment for a one year old she-camel and two year old he-camel.

Narrated Anas: Abu Bakr wrote to me what Allah had instructed His Apostle (pbuh) to do regarding the one who had to pay one Bint Makhad (ie one year-old she-camel) as Zakat, and he did not have it but had got Bint Labun (two year old she-camel). (He wrote that) it could be accepted from him as Zakat, and the collector of Zakat would return him 20 Dirhams or two sheep; and if the Zakat payer had not a Bint Makhad, but he had Ibn Labun (a two year old he-camel) then it could be accepted as his Zakat, but he would not be paid anything .

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive to fulfill our obligations and duties even if we don't get anything back in return .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the payment of Zakat, which is an obligatory charity in Islam. It explains that if someone has to pay one Bint Makhad, which is a one year old she camel, but they only have a Bint Labun, which is a two year old she camel, then it can be accepted as their Zakat and they will receive 20 Dirhams or two sheep in return. If the person has no Bint Makhad but instead has an Ibn Labun, which is a two year old he camel, then it can be accepted as their Zakat but they will not receive anything in return. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to fulfill our obligations and duties even if we don't get anything back in return because Allah knows what we do and will reward us accordingly on the Day of Judgment.
