Sahih al-Bukhari 1420 (Book 24, Hadith 24) #1364
Charity as a Symbol of Following the Prophet

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) said that the wife who will follow him first in death is the one who practices charity the most.

Narrated 'Aisha: Some of the wives of the Prophet asked him, "Who amongst us will be the first to follow you (ie die after you)?" He said, "Whoever has the longest hand". So they started measuring their hands with a stick and Sauda's hand turned out to be the longest. (When Zainab bint Jahsh died first of all in the caliphate of 'Umar), we came to know that the long hand was a symbol of practicing charity, so she was the first to follow the Prophet and she used to love to practice charity. (Sauda died later in the caliphate of Muawiya).

QUICK LESSONS:
Practice charity for Allah's sake

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how charity is a symbol of following the prophet. The wives of the prophet asked him who would be first to follow him in death and he replied with whoever has longest hand. They started measuring their hands with a stick and it was found that Sauda had longest hand which symbolized her practice of charity. This shows us that those who practice charity are more likely to follow in his footsteps and be closer to Allah. We should strive to do good deeds such as giving charity so we can become closer to Allah and His messenger.
