Serving Parents Over Jihad

SUMMARY: A person asked the Prophet for permission to participate in Jihad, and the Prophet advised him to serve his parents instead.

Abdullah b. 'Amr reported that a person came to Allah's Apostle and sought permission (to participate) in Jihad, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Are your parents living? He said: Yes. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: You should put in your best efforts (in their) service.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your elders, Put effort into serving your parents .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of a person who came to the Prophet Muhammad and asked for permission to participate in jihad. The Prophet responded by asking if his parents were still alive, and when he said yes, he advised him that it would be better for him to put all of his efforts into serving them instead. This hadith teaches us that our duty towards our parents is more important than any other obligation we may have, even if it is something as important as jihad. It also shows us how much respect we should have for our elders and how we should prioritize their needs over ours. We should always strive to make sure that they are taken care of before anything else in life.
