The Strength of Pre-Islamic Alliances

SUMMARY: Islam strengthens and intensifies the alliances established in pre-Islamic days.

Jubair b. Mut'im reported Allah's Messenger as saying: There is no alliance (Hilf) in Islam but (the Hilf) established in the pre-Islamic days (for good). Islam intensifies and strengthens it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect cultural heritage and traditions; benefit society at large
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of alliances that were established before the advent of Islam. It is reported by Jubair b. Mut'im that Allah's Messenger said that there is no alliance in Islam but those which were established in pre-Islamic days for good. This means that any alliance made before the advent of Islam should be respected and strengthened by Muslims as it was a part of their culture and tradition even before they accepted Islamic teachings. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us to respect our cultural heritage and traditions even if they are not necessarily Islamic teachings as long as they are beneficial for society at large.
