Sahih al-Bukhari 1409 (Book 24, Hadith 13) #1353
Envy Only in Two Cases

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that there is no envy except in two cases: when Allah has given someone wealth and they spend it in the right way, and when Allah has given someone wisdom and they use it to make decisions and teach others.

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud: I heard the Prophet saying, "There is no envy except in two: a person whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it in the right way, and a person whom Allah has given wisdom (ie religious knowledge) and he gives his decisions accordingly and teaches it to the others".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be grateful for blessings from Allah SWT; Use wealth & knowledge for good; Share your knowledge with others; Make decisions based on Islamic teachings.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that envy is only acceptable in two cases. The first case is when Allah has blessed a person with wealth, and they use it to do good deeds. This could include giving charity or helping those who are less fortunate than them. The second case is when Allah has blessed a person with religious knowledge, which includes understanding of the Quran and Sunnah, as well as Islamic law. In this case, the person should use their knowledge to make decisions based on Islamic teachings, as well as teaching others what they know so that more people can benefit from their wisdom. Both of these cases demonstrate how we should be grateful for what we have been given by Allah SWT, rather than feeling envious of those who have more than us or are more knowledgeable than us.
