The Transmission of a Hadith

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the transmission of a narration from Abu Mu'awiya to Jarir and Waki', with the names of Mu'adh and Ubayy mentioned in different order in different narrations.

This hadith has been reported on the authority of Abu Bakr b. Abu Shaiba and Abu Kuraib, and both of them said: Abu Mu'awiya narrated to us from A'mash on the authority of Jarir and Waki', and in a narration of Abu Bakr transmitted on the authority of Abu Mu'awiya the mention of Mu'adh has preceded Ubayy's, and in the narration transmitted on the authority of Abu Kuraib, the name of Ubayy preceded Muadh's.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، بِإِسْنَادِ جَرِيرٍ وَوَكِيعٍ فِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ، قَدَّمَ مُعَاذًا قَبْلَ أُبَىٍّ ‏.‏ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي كُرَيْبٍ أُبَىٌّ قَبْلَ مُعَاذٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the transmission of a narration from one person to another. It was reported on the authority of several people including Abu Bakr b., Abu Shaiba and Abu Kuraib. They all said that they heard it from someone named A'mash who heard it from two other people named Jarir and Waki'. In some narrations, the name of Mu'adh preceded Ubayy's while in others it was vice versa. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful when transmitting information as even small details can change its meaning or context completely. We should also be aware that there are multiple versions or interpretations for any given story or event which can lead to confusion if not properly understood or explained.
