Clothing for Muhrims

SUMMARY: A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ) what kind of clothes a Muhrim should wear, and the Prophet (ﷺ) replied with a list of items that should not be worn.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: A man asked the Prophet : "What (kinds of clothes) should a Muhrim (a Muslim intending to perform 'Umra or Hajj) wear? He replied, "He should not wear a shirt, a turban, trousers, a head cloak or garment scented with saffron or Wars (kinds of perfumes). And if he has no slippers, then he can use Khuffs (socks made from thick fabric or leather) but the socks should be cut short so as to make the ankles bare". .

QUICK LESSONS:
Dress modestly while performing religious rituals like Umrah and Hajj .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about what kind of clothing a Muslim intending to perform Umrah or Hajj should wear. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised that such people should not wear shirts, turbans, trousers, head cloaks or garments scented with saffron or perfumes. If they do not have slippers then they can use leather socks but these must be cut short so as to make the ankles bare. This hadith teaches us that when performing Umrah or Hajj we must dress modestly and avoid wearing anything too extravagant or luxurious. We must also ensure that our clothing does not contain any prohibited substances such as saffron and perfumes which are forbidden in Islam during this time period.
