Punishment for Big Sins

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by two graves and said that the people in them were being punished for a big sin, one of which was going about with calumnies while the other was not taking care to avoid soiling himself with urine. He then split a green leaf of a date-palm into two pieces and fixed one piece on each grave, hoping that their punishment would be abated until the leaves dried up.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet ﷺ once passed by two graves and said, "They (the deceased persons in those graves) are being tortured not for a great thing to avoid". And then added, "Yes, (they are being punished for a big sin), for one of them used to go about with calumnies while the other never saved himself from being soiled with his urine". (Ibn 'Abbas added): Then he took a green leaf of a date-palm) and split it into two pieces and fixed one piece on each grave and said, "May their punishment be abated till these (two pieces) get dry".
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى قَبْرَيْنِ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ إِنَّهُمَا لَيُعَذَّبَانِ، وَمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ مِنْ كَبِيرٍ ـ ثُمَّ قَالَ ـ بَلَى أَمَّا أَحَدُهُمَا فَكَانَ يَسْعَى بِالنَّمِيمَةِ، وَأَمَّا أَحَدُهُمَا فَكَانَ لاَ يَسْتَتِرُ مِنْ بَوْلِهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ عُودًا رَطْبًا فَكَسَرَهُ بِاثْنَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ غَرَزَ كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا عَلَى قَبْرٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏"‏ لَعَلَّهُ يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمَا مَا لَمْ يَيْبَسَا

This hadith is about how Allah punishes those who commit big sins. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed by two graves and said that those buried in them were being punished for committing major sins. One of these sins was going around spreading false accusations or backbiting others, while the other sin was not taking care to avoid soiling himself with urine. To show mercy on them, he took a green leaf from a date palm tree and split it into two pieces before placing one piece on each grave. He hoped that this would lessen their punishment until the leaves dried up completely. This hadith teaches us to be careful when we speak about others as well as take care of our hygiene habits since Allah will punish us if we do not follow His commands properly.
