Sahih al-Bukhari 1367 (Book 23, Hadith 119) #1311
Speaking of the Deceased

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that people should be careful with their words when speaking about the deceased, as they are Allah's witnesses on earth and will be judged accordingly.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: A funeral procession passed and the people praised the deceased. The Prophet said, "It has been affirmed to him". Then another funeral procession passed and the people spoke badly of the deceased. The Prophet said, "It has been affirmed to him"'.Umar bin Al-Khattab asked (Allah's Messenger (pbuh) ), "What has been affirmed?" He replied, "You praised this, so Paradise has been affirmed to him; and you spoke badly of this, so Hell has been affirmed to him. You people are Allah's witnesses on earth".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our words when speaking about those who have passed away. We must remember that we are Allah's witnesses on earth and will be judged accordingly for what we say. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that if a person is praised after their death, then Paradise has been affirmed to them, but if they are spoken badly of then Hell has been affirmed to them. This hadith serves as a reminder for us all to think before we speak and not take lightly our responsibility as Allah's witnesses on earth.
