Sahih Muslim 2284a (Book 43, Hadith 18) #13043
The Prophet's Protection of His Ummah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is comparing himself and his Ummah to a person who lit a fire, and the moths and insects that are drawn to it. He is trying to protect them from harm, but they continue to put themselves in danger.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: The similitude of mine and that of my Umma is that of a person who lit fire and there began to fall into it insects and moths. And I am there to hold you back, but you plunge into it.

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is using an analogy of a person lighting a fire with moths and insects being drawn towards it. He is trying to protect them from harm by holding them back, but they continue to put themselves in danger. This hadith teaches us that the Prophet Muhammad was always looking out for his Ummah and wanted nothing more than their safety and protection. It also serves as an example for us today; we should be mindful of our actions so that we do not put ourselves in harm’s way unnecessarily. We should also strive to look out for one another like the Prophet did with his Ummah.
