Sahih Muslim 2281 (Book 43, Hadith 9) #13034
Mindfulness of Resources

SUMMARY: Allah's Apostle taught that it is important to be mindful of the resources we have and not take more than what is necessary.

Jabir reported that a person came to Allah's Apostle and asked for food. And he gave him half a wasq of barley, and the person and his wife and their guests kept on making use of it (as a food) until he weighed it (in order to find out the actual quantity, and it was no more). He came to Allah's Apostle (and informed him about it). He said: Had you not weighed it, you would be eating out of it and it would have remained intact for you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of your resources; practice moderation; express gratitude for your blessings; do not take more than what you need.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Jabir, speaks about the importance of being mindful and grateful for the resources we have. It tells us that when a person came to Allah's Apostle asking for food, he was given half a wasq of barley. The man and his wife kept using it until they weighed it in order to find out how much they had left. When they informed Allah's Apostle about this, he said that if they hadn't weighed it, then they would still be eating from it and it would remain intact for them. This teaches us to be mindful of our resources so that we don't take more than what is necessary and also express gratitude for what we have been blessed with. We should practice moderation in all aspects of life so as not to waste any blessings or opportunities given to us by God Almighty.
