Sahih Muslim 2251 (Book 40, Hadith 19) #12969
The Appropriate Way to Express Negative Feelings

SUMMARY: It is not appropriate to say "My soul has become evil" but rather one should say "My soul has become remorseless".

Abu Umama b. Sahl b. Hunaif, on the authority of his father, reported Allah's Messenger as saying: None of you should say:" My soul has become evil," but he should say:" My soul has become remorseless".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful about how you express yourself in difficult situations; Take responsibility for your actions; Seek forgiveness from Allah if you have done something wrong; Respectfully express yourself in difficult situations.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that it is important to be mindful of our words and how we express ourselves when we are feeling negative emotions. Instead of saying something like “my soul has become evil”, which implies that a person’s character or nature is bad, it would be more appropriate to say “my soul has become remorseless” which implies that a person may have done something wrong and needs to repent for it. This hadith encourages us to take responsibility for our actions and seek forgiveness from Allah if we have done something wrong instead of blaming our character or nature for it. It also teaches us the importance of being mindful about how we express ourselves in difficult situations as this can affect how others perceive us and can even lead them astray if they take what we said too seriously.
