Sahih Muslim 2218f (Book 39, Hadith 129) #12867
Dealing with Calamities

SUMMARY: This hadith is about a calamity or illness that was a punishment for some nations before us, and it comes and goes. We should not go towards it if we hear of its presence in a land, nor should we flee from it if we are already in the land where it has broken out.

Usama b. Zaid reported Allah's Messenger having said this: This calamity or illness was a punishment with which were punished some of the nations before you. Then it was left upon the earth. It goes away once and comes back again. He who heard of its presence in a land should not go towards it, and he who happened to be in a land where it had broken out should not fly from it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Remain patient when faced with difficult situations; accept them as part of life's tests; remember that these trials come as part of Allah's plan for our lives; persevere through them despite their difficulty.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of an illness or calamity that was sent as punishment to some nations before us. It is something that comes and goes, so if one hears of its presence in a certain land they should not go there, but if they are already present in the land where this calamity has broken out then they should not flee from it either. This teaches us to be patient when faced with difficult situations and to accept them as part of life's tests rather than running away from them. We must also remember that these trials come as part of Allah's plan for our lives, so even though they may be hard to bear at times, ultimately He will reward us for our patience and perseverance through them.
