Sahih Muslim 2165a (Book 39, Hadith 11) #12749
The Power of Kindness

SUMMARY: Allah loves kindness in every matter and it is important to respond with kindness even when faced with hostility.

'A'isha reported that a group of Jews came to Allah's Messenger and sought his audience and said: As-Sam-u-'Alaikum. A'isha said in response: As-Sam-u-'Alaikum (death be upon you) and curse also, whereupon Allah's Messenger said: 'A'isha, verily Allah loves kindness in every matter. She said: Did you bear what they said? Thereupon he said: Did you not hear that I said (to them): Wa 'Alaikum.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respond kindly even when faced with hostility.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of responding to hostility with kindness. It was narrated by A'isha, who reported that a group of Jews came to Allah's Messenger and said "As-Sam-u-'Alaikum" which translates to "may death be upon you". In response, A'isha said the same phrase back but added a curse. However, Allah's Messenger responded by saying "A'isha, verily Allah loves kindness in every matter". This hadith teaches us that no matter how we are treated or spoken to, we should always respond kindly as this is what Allah loves most. We should not let our emotions get the best of us and instead take a step back and think before responding.
