Changing Names in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) changed the name of Zainab, daughter of Umm Salama, from Barra to Zainab and also changed the name of another woman named Barra to Zainab.

Zainab, daughter of Umm Salama, reported: My name first was Barra. Allah's Messenger gave me the name of Zainab. Then there entered (into the house of Allah's Prophet as a wife) Zainab, daughter of Jahsh, and her name was also Barra, and he gave her the name of Zainab.

EXPLANATIONS:
In Islam, it is believed that names have a great significance and can affect one's life. This hadith tells us that even the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was aware of this fact and changed the names of two women from Barra to Zainab. This shows us how important it is for Muslims to choose meaningful names for their children as they will be associated with them throughout their lives. It also teaches us that we should not be afraid to change our own names if we feel like they do not suit us or are not appropriate anymore.
