Forbidden Names for Servants

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forbade people from giving their servants certain names.

Samura b. Jundub reported: Allah's Messenger forbade us to give names to our servants as these four names: Aflah (Successful), Rabdh (Profit), Yasar (Wealth), and Nafi' (Beneficial).

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your servants regardless of their name or station in life.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught us to be mindful of the names we give our servants. He specifically prohibited four names in particular - Aflah, Rabdh, Yasar and Nafi'. These are all Arabic words that have positive connotations such as success and wealth. By prohibiting these names, the Prophet was teaching us to not give our servants false expectations or hopes of a better life than what they already have. We should instead treat them with respect and kindness regardless of their name or station in life.
