Sahih Muslim 2133h (Book 38, Hadith 10) #12688
Naming Children in Islam

SUMMARY: A person was advised to name his son something other than Qasim, and the Prophet suggested the name 'Abd al-Rahman instead.

Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported: A child was born in the house of a person amongst us, and he gave him the name of Qasim. We said: We will not allow you (to give the name) to your child as Qasim (and thus adopt the kunya of Abu'l-Qasim) and coal your eyes. He (that person) came to Allah's Apostle and made a mention of that to him, whereupon he said: Call your son 'Abd al-Rahman.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek guidance from Allah & His Messenger ; Choose meaningful names ; Respectful behavior towards parents ; Listen to wise counsel of elders in one's community .

EXPLANATIONS:
It is important for Muslims to be mindful when naming their children, as it can have a lasting impact on their lives. In this hadith, a man wanted to give his son the name Qasim, but was advised against it by others in his community. He then went to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for advice and was told to call him ‘Abd al-Rahman instead. This shows that Muslims should seek guidance from Allah and His Messenger ﷺ when making decisions about their children’s names, as they are more knowledgeable about what is best for them than anyone else. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us that we should choose names with good meanings so that our children will grow up with positive values and beliefs instilled in them from an early age.
