Sahih Muslim 2131 (Book 38, Hadith 1) #12679
Respect for Prophets and Messengers

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to call oneself by the kunya of a Prophet or Messenger.

Anas reported that person at Baqi' called another person as" Abu'l- Qasim," and Allah's Messenger turned towards him. He (the person who had uttered these words) said: Messenger of Allah, I did not mean you, but I called such and such (person), whereupon Allah's Messenger said: You may call yourself by my name, but not by my kunya.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be respectful towards Prophets and Messengers .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of respecting Prophets and Messengers, as well as their kunyas. A kunya is an honorific title given to a person in Arabic culture, usually consisting of the word ‘Abu’ followed by the name of one’s first-born son or daughter. In this hadith, Allah's Messenger was addressed with his kunya instead of his name, which he did not approve of. He instructed that it is not permissible to call oneself by the kunya of a Prophet or Messenger out of respect for them and their status in society. This hadith also teaches us that we should be mindful when addressing people with titles such as 'Abu' so that we do not mistakenly address someone who does not deserve it out of respect for those who do deserve it.
