Sahih Muslim 2110b (Book 37, Hadith 153) #12638
The Punishment of Painters on the Day of Resurrection

SUMMARY: On the Day of Resurrection, those who painted pictures in this world will be punished for it.

Anas b. Malik said: I was sitting with Ibn 'Abbas when he gave religious verdicts but he did not say that it was Allah's Messenger who had said that. However when a man said to him (Ibn 'Abbas): I am the painter of these pictures. Ibn 'Abbas said: I heard Allah's Messenger as saying: He who painted pictures in the world would be compelled to breathe soul in them on the Day of Resurrection, but he would not be able to breathe soul (in them).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a conversation between Anas b. Malik and Ibn 'Abbas, where Ibn 'Abbas was giving religious verdicts but he did not say that it was Allah's Messenger who had said that. However when a man said to him that he was the painter of these pictures, Ibn 'Abbas said that he heard Allah's Messenger as saying that those who painted pictures in this world would be punished on the Day of Resurrection by being forced to breathe soul into them but they would not be able to do so. This hadith teaches us about how painting or creating images is forbidden in Islam and how those who do so will face punishment on the day when everyone will be held accountable for their actions. It also serves as a reminder for us to stay away from such activities and instead focus our time and energy on more productive things which can benefit us both in this life and hereafter.
