Sahih Muslim 2092c (Book 37, Hadith 95) #12580
Sealing Letters with a Silver Ring

SUMMARY: The Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) suggested that he should have a silver ring made with his name engraved on it to seal his letters.

Anas b. Malik reported that when Allah's Messenger decided to write letters to the Byzantine (Emperor) they (his Companions) told him that they would not read a letter unless it is sealed. (Then) Allah's Messenger had a silver ring made (for himself), (its shape is so vivid in my mind) as if I see its brightness in the band of Allah's Messenger and its engravement was (Muhammad, Messenger of Allah).

QUICK LESSONS:
Make sure your work is authenticated and properly identified so others can recognize you for your efforts.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Anas b. Malik tells us about the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad's suggestion to him when he decided to write letters to the Byzantine Emperor. They suggested that he should have a silver ring made for himself and engrave his name on it as "Muhammad, Messenger of Allah". This was done so that when they received the letter from him they would know it was authentic and not forged by someone else. This hadith teaches us about how important it is to authenticate our work and make sure we are properly identified in whatever we do in life. It also shows us how much respect people had for Prophet Muhammad even before they met him or heard about him directly from him; this is because they knew that if something came from him then it must be true and genuine.
