The Prophet's Gift of Silk

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad gave Ali a garment made of silk, but when he saw Ali wearing it, he became angry and so Ali tore it up and distributed it amongst his women.

'Ali b. Abu Talib reported that Allah's Messenger gave me to wear a garment in the form of silk cloak. I went out wearing it, but saw signs of anger on his face, so I tore it and distributed it amongst my women.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when receiving gifts from others; share your possessions with those who need them more than you do; strive to make sure your behaviour is respectful towards those around you at all times .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad giving a gift to 'Ali b. Abu Talib in the form of a garment made out of silk. When 'Ali went out wearing this gift, the Prophet saw signs of anger on his face and so 'Ali decided to tear up the garment and distribute it amongst his women instead. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful when receiving gifts from others, as well as being generous with our own possessions by sharing them with those around us who may need them more than we do. We should also be aware that our actions can affect how others feel towards us; in this case, the Prophet was displeased with what he saw when 'Ali wore the garment outside which shows that we must always strive to make sure our behaviour is respectful towards those around us at all times.
