Mourning in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet (pbuh) was saddened by the news of the death of three people and when he heard that women were crying, he ordered them to be forbidden from doing so.

Narrated 'Aisha: When the Prophet ﷺ got the news of the death of Ibn Haritha, Ja'far and Ibn Rawaha he sat down and looked sad and I was looking at him through the chink of the door. A man came and told him about the crying of the women of Ja'far. The Prophet ﷺ ordered him to forbid them. The man went and came back saying that he had told them but they did not listen to him. The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Forbid them". So again he went and came back for the third time and said, "O Allah's Messenger ﷺ! By Allah, they did not listen to us at all". ('Aisha added): Allah's Messenger ﷺ ordered him to go and put dust in their mouths. I said, (to that man) "May Allah stick your nose in the dust (ie humiliate you)! You could neither (persuade the women to) fulfill the order of Allah's Messenger ﷺ nor did you relieve Allah's Messenger ﷺ from fatigue".
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ أَخْبَرَتْنِي عَمْرَةُ، قَالَتْ سَمِعْتُ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ قَالَتْ لَمَّا جَاءَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَتْلُ ابْنِ حَارِثَةَ وَجَعْفَرٍ وَابْنِ رَوَاحَةَ جَلَسَ يُعْرَفُ فِيهِ الْحُزْنُ، وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ مِنْ صَائِرِ الْبَابِ ـ شَقِّ الْبَابِ ـ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ إِنَّ نِسَاءَ جَعْفَرٍ، وَذَكَرَ بُكَاءَهُنَّ، فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَنْهَاهُنَّ، فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ الثَّانِيَةَ، لَمْ يُطِعْنَهُ فَقَالَ انْهَهُنَّ‏.‏ فَأَتَاهُ الثَّالِثَةَ قَالَ وَاللَّهِ غَلَبْنَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَزَعَمَتْ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ‏ "‏ فَاحْثُ فِي أَفْوَاهِهِنَّ التُّرَابَ ‏"‏‏.‏ فَقُلْتُ أَرْغَمَ اللَّهُ أَنْفَكَ، لَمْ تَفْعَلْ مَا أَمَرَكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَلَمْ تَتْرُكْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْعَنَاءِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about mourning in Islam. It is narrated by 'Aisha who said that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ got news of the death of three people, he sat down and looked sad. A man came and told him about the crying of women for Ja'far, so the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to forbid them from doing so. When they did not listen to him, he asked them to put dust in their mouths as a sign of forbidding them from wailing or mourning loudly. This hadith teaches us that although it is permissible for Muslims to mourn for their loved ones who have passed away, it should be done with moderation and without loud wailing or excessive grief as this was forbidden by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself.
