Sahih Muslim 2009b (Book 36, Hadith 113) #12343
Invoking Blessings and Curses

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was travelling from Mecca to Medina and was pursued by Suraqa b. Malik b. Ju'shum, but the Prophet invoked a curse upon him and his horse sank in the desert. Abu Bakr Siddiq then milked some milk for the Prophet to drink, which pleased him.

Al-Bara' reported: When Allah's Messenger went forth from Mecca to Medina, Suraqa b. Malik b. Ju'shum pursued him. Allah's Messenger invoked curse upon him, and his horse sank (in the desert). He (Suraqa) said: (Allah's Messenger), invoke blessings for me and I will do no harm to you. He (the Holy Prophet) then supplicated Allah. (At that time) he (the Holy Prophet) felt thirsty, and they happened to pass by a shepherd. Abu Bakr Siddiq said: I took hold of a bowl and milked some milk into it for Allah's Messenger and gave it to him. He drank it and I was pleased.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of your words & invoke blessings instead of curses whenever possible; be generous with your resources even if it is something small like giving someone something to drink when they are thirsty or hungry; these small acts can make a big difference!

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad PBUH used invocation when he was travelling from Mecca to Medina with Abu Bakr Siddiq. He was being pursued by Suraqa b. Malik b. Ju'shum, so he invoked a curse upon him and his horse sank in the desert as a result of it. After this incident, Abu Bakr Siddiq milked some milk for Allah's Messenger PBUH to drink which pleased him greatly as it quenched his thirst after such an ordeal. This hadith teaches us that we should always be mindful of our words because they have power; we should use them wisely and invoke blessings instead of curses whenever possible as this will bring us closer to Allah SWT and benefit us in both worlds inshaAllah! It also teaches us that we should be generous with our resources even if it is something small like giving someone something to drink when they are thirsty or hungry; these small acts can make a big difference!
