Sahih Muslim 1733f (Book 36, Hadith 89) #12319
Teaching, Cooperating & Not Repelling People

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of teaching, cooperating and not repelling people, and that any intoxicant that detains one from prayer is forbidden.

Abu Burda reported on the authority of his grandfather that Allah's Messenger sent him and Mu'adh b. Jabal to Yemen and said to them: Give good tidings to the (people). and make things easy (for them), teach (them), and do not repel (them) ; and I think he also said: Cooperate cheerfully with each other. When he (the Holy Prophet) turned his back, Abu Musa returned to him and said: Allah's Messenger, they (the people of Yemen) have a drink which is (made) from honey and which is prepared by cooking it until it coagulates, and Mizr is prepared from barley, whereupon Allah's Messenger said: Every intoxicant that detains you from prayer is forbidden.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of teaching, cooperating and not repelling people. It was narrated by Abu Burda who reported on the authority of his grandfather that Allah's Messenger sent him and Mu'adh to Yemen with instructions to give good tidings to the people there, make things easy for them, teach them and do not repel them. He also instructed them to cooperate cheerfully with each other. When he turned his back, Abu Musa returned to him and informed him about a drink made from honey which was prepared by cooking it until it coagulates as well as Mizr which was prepared from barley. In response Allah's Messenger said that every intoxicant that detains one from prayer is forbidden. This hadith teaches us how important it is for us to be kind towards others in our interactions with them; we should strive to teach others what we know in order for them to benefit from our knowledge while also being mindful not to repel or discourage anyone in our interactions with them. We should also cooperate cheerfully with each other so as not indulge in any activities or drinks which may prevent us from fulfilling our religious obligations such as prayer or fasting etc., thus leading us astray away from God’s path .
