Sahih Muslim 977d (Book 36, Hadith 82) #12312
Intoxicants and Lawfulness

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that it is not the vessel or container that makes a thing lawful or unlawful, but rather it is the intoxicant itself that is unlawful.

Ibn Buraida, on the authority of his father, reported Allah's Messenger as saying: I had forbidden you (from the preparation of Nabidh) and drinking it in certain vessels, (but now you may do so if you like) for it is not vessels or a vessel that makes a thing lawful or unlawful. It is every intoxicant that is unlawful.

QUICK LESSONS:
Abide by Islamic teachings ; Avoid impermissible items ; Understand what makes something permissible ; Be mindful when consuming food & drink items .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains an important Islamic principle regarding intoxicants. It teaches us that it is not the vessel or container in which something is prepared or consumed that makes it lawful or unlawful; rather, it is the intoxicant itself which determines its lawfulness. For example, if a person prepares Nabidh in a certain vessel and drinks from this vessel then this does not make Nabidh lawful as long as there are still traces of alcohol present in it. Similarly, if someone consumes an alcoholic beverage from any type of container then this does not make alcohol permissible either. In conclusion, we learn from this hadith that only those things which are permissible according to Islamic teachings can be consumed and anything else should be avoided at all costs.
