Sahih al-Bukhari 123 (Book 3, Hadith 65) #123
Fighting in the Cause of Allah

SUMMARY: Fighting in the cause of Allah is only permissible if it is done to make His Word (Islam) superior.

Narrated Abu Musa: A man came to the Prophet and asked, "O Allah's Messenger ! What kind of fighting is in Allah's cause? (I ask this), for some of us fight because of being enraged and angry and some for the sake of his pride and haughtiness". The Prophet raised his head (as the questioner was standing) and said, "He who fights so that Allah's Word (Islam) should be superior, then he fights in Allah's cause".

QUICK LESSONS:
Fight to make Islam superior according to Islamic laws and principles.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that fighting in the cause of Allah is only permissible if it is done to make His Word superior. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked by a man what kind of fighting was allowed in the name of Allah and he replied that it must be done for the purpose of making Islam superior. This hadith teaches us that we should not fight out of anger or pride but rather for a noble purpose such as making Islam more prominent and respected. We should also remember that even when we are fighting for this noble cause, we must still abide by Islamic laws and principles such as not harming innocent people or animals.
