Sahih Muslim 1980g (Book 36, Hadith 12) #12242
Prohibition of Liquor

SUMMARY: A visitor informed Abu Talha that liquor has been prohibited, and Abu Talha asked Anas to break the pitcher containing the drink.

Anas b. Malik reported: I was serving drink to Abu 'Ubaida b. jarrah, Abu Talha and Ubayy b. Ka'b prepared from unripe dates and fresh dates when a visitor came and he said: Verily liquor has been prohibited. Thereupon, Abu Talha said: Anas, stand up and break this pitcher. I stool up and (took hold) of a pointed stone and struck the pitcher with its lower part until it broke into pieces.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of liquor in Islam. It was narrated by Anas b. Malik who reported that he was serving a drink made from unripe dates and fresh dates to Abu 'Ubaida b. Jarrah, Abu Talha and Ubayy b. Ka'b when a visitor came and informed them that liquor has been prohibited in Islam. Upon hearing this news, Abu Talha asked Anas to stand up and break the pitcher containing the drink as it was now forbidden according to Islamic teachings. So Anas took hold of a pointed stone and struck the pitcher with its lower part until it broke into pieces thus demonstrating his obedience towards Allah's commandment regarding prohibition of liquor in Islam. This hadith teaches us about our responsibility as Muslims to obey Allah's commands even if it means sacrificing something we enjoy or like doing such as drinking alcohol or other intoxicants which are strictly forbidden in Islam for their harmful effects on our physical health as well as spiritual wellbeing .
